120 Year Old Cast Iron Water Mains in Guyana to be Replaced
Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) officials have reported a new GY$800 million project that entails replacing their 120-year old cast iron water mains with new HDPE pipes. Mr. Aubrey Roberts, the Executive Director of Design of Infrastructure & Water Resources appeared on 103.1 FM to express his confidence in the new materials. He explained that the new pipes can withstand pressure up to 200 PSI and that there is no need for lead joints since the new pipes will be joined via fusion welding. Executive Director of Operations, Jawaharlall Ramjung explained that the old mains have already outlived their typical lifespans and the only option would be to fully replace them. Official reports show that in 2021, the leaky old mains were repaired every three months and in quarter one of 2022, leaks have already been repaired nearly monthly. GWI has already stockpiled the new pipes and estimate that approximately 270,000 kilometers of pipe will be changed. Click here to read more.
