ASTM Has Approved a New Test Method for PP Pressure Piping
ASTM International’s plastic piping systems committee has ratified F3497, a new test strategy that can assist in ensuring that PP pressure materials are appropriately resistant to the appearance of disinfectants in potable water systems. The committee will be leading round robin testing to improve a precision and bias statement for the standard. This work straightforwardly connects with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #6 on clean water and sanitation. ASTM International member Jim Paschal stated that“In North America, we use much higher levels of disinfectants such as chlorine in our potable water systems than in most other countries. This new test method will provide one more tool for helping to ensure that polypropylene piping materials are suitable for this application.” The picture above shows the relationship between pH/free-chlorine and Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) in a deionized water solution. The specific ORP/pH/ chlorine relationship is dependent on specific water quality.
